About the Species

The Belman (Umbrina robinsoni), also known as Baardman or Tasselfish, is a distinctive South African coastal fish recognised by its deep, silver-grey body and the small fleshy barbel beneath its chin. Found around rocky reefs, gullies and sandy bays, it feeds on crabs, prawns, worms and other small bottom-dwelling invertebrates, quietly patrolling the seabed in search of prey.

Although less celebrated than some of South Africa's larger gamefish, the Belman is an important part of the country's nearshore marine ecosystems. Its calm nature, subtle colouring and preference for shallow coastal habitats make it a familiar yet often overlooked inhabitant of the coastline.
