About the Species

The Black Musselcracker (Cymatoceps nasutus) is one of South Africa's most powerful and iconic reef fish, recognised for its deep, muscular body and dark charcoal colouring. Inhabiting rocky reefs and kelp forests along the coastline, it feeds on hard-shelled prey such as mussels, crabs, sea urchins and crayfish, using exceptionally strong jaws and crushing teeth to break through shells with ease.

Highly prized by anglers for its extraordinary strength and endurance, the Black Musselcracker is also one of South Africa's most carefully protected marine species. Large individuals can live for decades, becoming true giants of the reefs they inhabit.
