Blacktail / Kolstert

Diplodus capensis

Endurance in the wash.

Thrives in turbulent water, feeding where waves break against rock.

A compact body marked by soft silver tones and distinct dark banding near the tail.

About the Species

The Blacktail (Diplodus sargus capensis) is one of South Africa's most familiar and widely distributed inshore fish. Easily recognised by its bright silver body and distinctive black saddle marking at the base of the tail, it inhabits rocky shores, surf zones, reefs and offshore pinnacles along the coastline. Juveniles feed on small crustaceans, worms and barnacle larvae before gradually adopting a broader diet of mussels, seaweeds, sponges and other marine invertebrates as they mature.

A favourite among shore anglers and divers alike, the Blacktail is admired for its resilience, adaptability and year-round presence along South Africa's coast. Its clean lines, subtle markings and unmistakable silhouette have made it one of the country's most recognisable reef species. This artwork celebrates the quiet beauty of a fish that has become an enduring symbol of South Africa's rocky shoreline, capturing its timeless character through PESCADO's refined appreciation of the natural world.
