About the Species

The Geelbek (Atractoscion aequidens), also known as Cape Salmon, is one of South Africa's most prized offshore game and table fish. Recognised by its elongated silver body and distinctive yellow mouth and gill covers, it inhabits deeper coastal waters around reefs, pinnacles, ledges and shipwrecks. A fast-moving predator, the Geelbek feeds primarily on mackerel, pilchards and other baitfish, while also taking squid when the opportunity arises. It often forms large schools and undertakes seasonal migrations along South Africa's coastline.
