About the Species

The Snoek (Thyrsites atun) is one of South Africa's most iconic pelagic fish, recognised by its long, streamlined silver body, sharply pointed head and prominent dorsal fin. Found in coastal and offshore waters, particularly along the West Coast, it is a fast-moving predator that undertakes extensive seasonal migrations in search of anchovies, pilchards, squid and other small schooling fish. Armed with razor-sharp teeth and remarkable speed, the Snoek is perfectly adapted for hunting in open water.
