About the Species

The Yellowtail (Seriola lalandi) is one of South Africa's most iconic offshore game fish, recognised by its streamlined body, metallic blue-green back and distinctive golden stripe running from the snout to the tail. Found around reefs, offshore pinnacles and open coastal waters, it is a fast, powerful predator that feeds primarily on baitfish, squid and crustaceans. Large schools often gather offshore, while individuals may venture into the surf in pursuit of prey, particularly during the annual sardine run.
