About the Species

The Dusky Kob (Argyrosomus japonicus) is one of South Africa's most iconic coastal game fish, recognised by its sleek silver body, powerful build and darker shading along the back. Found along sandy beaches, estuaries, reefs and deeper coastal waters, it is an opportunistic predator that feeds on fish, squid, cuttlefish, prawns and crabs. Juveniles spend much of their early life in estuaries before moving into marine waters, where adults patrol the coastline and offshore reefs in search of prey.

Renowned for its strength and endurance, the Dusky Kob has earned legendary status among South African anglers and remains one of the country's most admired inshore species. Its graceful proportions and understated beauty have made it an enduring symbol of South Africa's coastline.
