About the Species

The Galjoen (Dichistius capensis) is South Africa's national fish and one of the country's most iconic coastal species. Recognised by its deep-bodied shape and colouration ranging from light silver-grey to almost black, it inhabits turbulent surf zones, rocky shorelines and kelp forests where powerful waves continually shape its environment. Feeding primarily on red bait, mussels, barnacles and other marine invertebrates, the Galjoen is perfectly adapted to life among exposed reefs and coastal gullies.

Found only along the southern African coastline, the Galjoen holds a special place in South Africa's marine heritage.
