Its vivid blue-green markings, streamlined profile and schooling behaviour make it one of the ocean's most recognisable forage fish.

About the Species

The Mackerel (Scomber japonicus) is a fast-swimming pelagic fish found in temperate coastal waters throughout South Africa. Instantly recognisable by its brilliant metallic blue-green back, silvery flanks and distinctive dark zigzag markings, it travels in large schools close to the surface. Feeding primarily on plankton, krill, small crustaceans and baitfish, it plays an important role in transferring energy through the marine food web. Although it can grow to around 70 cm in length, individuals between 30 and 40 cm are most commonly encountered.

An essential part of South Africa's coastal ecosystem, the Mackerel supports both commercial and recreational fisheries while providing a vital food source for larger predatory fish, seabirds and marine mammals.
