About the Species

The Red Stumpnose (Chrysoblephus gibbiceps) is one of South Africa's most striking reef fish, recognised by its deep body, silvery-pink colouration, short blunt snout and distinctive darker vertical bars. Found on offshore reefs to depths of around 150 metres, particularly along the Agulhas Bank, it feeds on hard-shelled prey including molluscs, sea urchins, crabs and octopus, using its powerful molar-like teeth to crush and consume them.

Highly prized for its beauty and strong association with South Africa's offshore reefs, the Red Stumpnose is admired by anglers, divers and marine enthusiasts alike. Its rich colours and bold proportions have made it one of the country's most recognisable sparid species.
