About the Species

The Elf (Pomatomus saltatrix), also known as Shad, is one of South Africa's most exciting coastal game fish. Recognised by its streamlined silver body, deeply forked tail and razor-sharp teeth, it patrols surf zones, sandy beaches and reef edges in fast-moving schools. A relentless predator, it feeds primarily on anchovies, pilchards, mullet, pinkies and other baitfish, while also taking squid and shrimp. Seasonal migrations along the South African coastline are closely linked to spawning, making the species a familiar sight during the warmer months.

Renowned for its speed, aggression and spectacular surface strikes, the Elf has long been a favourite among South African shore anglers. Its sleek profile and powerful hunting instincts perfectly reflect the energy of the country's dynamic coastal waters.
