Southern Right Whale / Suidelike Noorkapper

Eubalaena australis

A seasonal giant.

Returns each winter to the sheltered bays of the South African coast.

Powerful, calm and unmistakable, with broad callosities and a deep charcoal body that has become synonymous with Hermanus.

About the Species

The Southern Right Whale (Eubalaena australis) is one of the world's most recognisable whales and a cherished visitor to South Africa's coastline. Every winter, these gentle giants migrate from the Southern Ocean to the sheltered bays of the Western Cape to calve and nurse their young. Hermanus, home to PESCADO Studio, is internationally celebrated as one of the finest land-based whale watching destinations in the world, where these remarkable animals can often be observed just metres from the shore.

With its immense barrel-shaped body, broad paddle-like flippers and distinctive cream-coloured callosities covering the head, the Southern Right Whale is perfectly adapted to life in the Southern Ocean. Once hunted to the brink of extinction, the species has made a remarkable recovery under international protection, although it remains vulnerable to threats including entanglement, vessel strikes and environmental change.

As the first marine mammal to join the PESCADO Collection, the Southern Right Whale reflects the studio's deep connection to Hermanus and the marine life that defines its coastline. This artwork celebrates one of South Africa's most iconic ocean inhabitants, capturing the quiet power, grace and timeless beauty of a species that has become inseparable from the town we call home.
