About the Species

The Yellowbelly Rockcod (Epinephelus marginatus) is one of South Africa's largest and most impressive reef predators. Recognised by its deep brown body, irregular pale markings and distinctive yellow underside, it inhabits rocky reefs and offshore ledges from shallow coastal waters to depths of around 200 metres. An ambush hunter, it feeds primarily on bottom-dwelling fish, crayfish and crustaceans, relying on patience and powerful bursts of speed rather than pursuit to capture its prey.

A true icon of South Africa's rocky coastline, the Yellowbelly Rockcod is admired for its impressive size, strength and commanding presence beneath the surface. Now a protected species following decades of overexploitation, it has become a symbol of the importance of conserving our marine heritage. This artwork celebrates one of South Africa's most iconic reef fish, capturing the quiet authority and timeless beauty of a species that has long inspired anglers, divers and ocean enthusiasts alike.
