About the Species

The Zebra (Diplodus hottentotus), also known in South Africa as the Wildeperd, is one of the country's most distinctive coastal fish. Instantly recognised by the five bold black bands crossing its silver-gold body, it inhabits rocky shores, reefs and coastal waters from the surf zone to depths of around 60 metres. Adults feed primarily on seaweeds, small crabs and marine worms, while juveniles favour crustaceans and insect larvae before gradually shifting to a more plant-based diet as they mature.

A familiar sight along South Africa's coastline, the Zebra is admired for its striking markings, graceful form and unique adaptation to life among rocky reefs. Its unmistakable pattern has made it a favourite among anglers, divers and marine enthusiasts alike.
